Doctor Who The Abominable Snowmen

“I have brought the world to it’s end.”

Within the Doctor Who series, there are a lot of monsters and villains that the time lord has engaged and fought with.  Daleks, Cybermen, and the Weeping Angels are just a few examples, let me scratch that, popular examples. These well know villains have unfortunately overshadowed some older monsters and villains, ones who back in the day were just as popular as the new ones now. But there is a reason for them being unknown to many and that is because lots of the stories from the 1st and 2nd Doctor are unfortunately lost, slowly faded away with time. But not all hope is lost, as one of these forgotten characters, “The Abominable Snowmen” along with it’s master “The Great Intelligence”, haven’t been completely lost to time. Due to interest to bring back the almost forgotten series from the early days, the 2nd Doctor Who storyline is soon to be animated! Hearing such exciting news inspired me to create my own version of The Abominable Snowmen (with a twist of him being robot) and it’s master The Great Intelligence.

For a story that has almost been lost to time, we do still have a good picture of the original suit for the Abominable, it’ very hairy but has a face that almost looks like an owl. Such an odd but somewhat interesting design choice compared to the ape like appearance many Abominable Snowmen’s tend to follow. Wanting to keep the old design but still make it recognizable as an abominable in pop culture, I based it’s large body off of apes. But, it’s hands have owl-like claws and long “eyebrows, similar to those seen on a great horned owl. For the face, I mixed the attributes of the owl and ape together, giving it an owl like beak that’s line with large ape like teeth. A face so ugly that only a mother could love. It is so ugly looking, and I like that, although when looking at it now, it looks like a mix of The Abominable Snowman from the Rudolph movie, and The Show Ghost from “Scooby Doo Where Are You”.

Then we have the creatures master, The Great Intelligence, which really it is just a glass orb that takes different forms of presenting itself throughout the series. It once was a small pyramid of glass orbs and another time, far in the future, it’s larger with rusty pipes attached to it. It’s almost Lovecraftian with how it doesn’t have just one form, that we are unsure of what it once was, why it changes or what it will change into next  Despite how it presents itself, one thing stays the same and that is it can speak and is super-duper smart, it’s in the name!. When I created my version of this unknown orb, I also gave it a body which was inspired by its creation called the Whisper Men (From episode, Name of the Doctor). Anyway I am very proud of this, and I cannot wait to finally see the 2nd Doctor lost storyline.
